Central Air Conditioner vs. a Heat Pump: What are the Pros and Cons?

When it comes time to install a new HVAC unit, homeowners often face the difficult decision of choosing the right air conditioner or heat pump. Although these systems work similarly when cooling your Sharpsburg, GA home, there are some differences when the temperatures drop.

How They Differ

Both systems transfer or pump heat from inside to the outside to cool your home. The biggest difference between the two is that central air conditioning systems do not reverse their direction and transfer heat from outside your home. These units rely on a furnace for heat production.

How They Operate

Although traditional air conditioning and heat pumps differ, they both operate to regulate inside air temperatures. Both systems use a compressor to compress refrigerant. Subsequently, a fan or blower forces the air into your home. The main difference is that you can switch a heat pump’s operational system to heating mode.

Pros and Cons

Heat Pumps

They may not be as effective as a traditional furnace. Models typically work better in climates where the temperature don’t drop below freezing. However, they don’t burn fossil fuel, usually don’t require additional equipment for heating and can lower your monthly energy bills.

Central Air Conditioning

Central air conditioning is similar to your refrigerator. It absorbs the heat from the air that passes over the coils, which results in cooler air within your home. One of the biggest advantages of central AC is the upfront cost. If you already have an energy-efficient furnace heating your home, then heat pump installation may not be needed.

The most important thing is that your HVAC system keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Scott Walker Heating and Air can help you make the right choice for your home. To learn more about our HVAC services, contact us.
